Human factors is the scientific study of how people perceive, think, and behave when interacting with products and their surrounding environments. In the context of consumer product litigation, human factors plays a critical role by examining real-world interactions with product design, controls, warnings, instructions, and foreseeable conditions of use. By focusing on human capabilities, limitations, and predictable patterns of behavior, a human factors analysis helps determine whether consumer actions were reasonable and foreseeable, rather than abnormal or reckless. It provides an objective framework for evaluating product usability, identifying design characteristics that may contribute to user confusion or error, and assessing whether warnings and instructions were noticeable, understandable, and actionable. In this presentation, Dr. Palac will share insights from a human factors perspective, drawing on examples from prior work to illustrate key product safety considerations and how to navigate potential problem-products.
